Ages ago, I started my career as a sculptor when I was in my twenties. I started working with 3D printing during the pandemic. Early on, these sculptures were at table-top scale. By now they reach towards the ceiling. They are tall and slim and sway precariously. The earlier sculptures were reminiscent of surreal trophies.&nbsp; I imagined them as esoteric plastic relics, seen from a distant future. The later 2024 &amp; 25 works have evolved, their gestalt is a hybrid from sci-fi towers, pop totems, while also relating to musical scores, a semi-abstract vertical sign language. &nbsp; &nbsp; The work reflects on technology as core human ambition: towards expansion, towards reaching higher and higher, towards creating grander, more elaborate, more dazzling structures, defying physics. No matter the environmental or societal damage. We are manic builders. We must build! These sculptures are built without much pragmatic restraint. Over time, with moree engineering, they do keep relieably standing now. They won't withstand a forceful shove or push however. They are delicate balancing acts, on the verge of going out of perfect alignment, ready to fail and disintegrate. They are built in modular fashion, with individual sections held together by circular joints, which help also with rebalancing. PARADOX PILE, in name, is an expression of each sculpture's ephemerality and hybrid aesthetic. Their imbalance is designed in with great intention, imbuing them with the aura of&nbsp; irregularity and the haphazard. Made from reels of thermo plastic thread, these works are bound to eventually break. They will change over time and likely require maintenance. In that, they are necessarily participatory. Repairs are, in fact, a part of the building process. During their design and construction, parts break, resulting often in additions and improvements. They emit sounds - somewhere in-between a human voice and amorphous ambient textures: part murmuring, humming, part fragmented speech, part singing, part screaming and crying. In irregular intervals, for fractions of seconds only, bursts of animated, abstract light forms seem to appear out of nowhere. Back to darkness, retinal afterimage impressions are left imprinted onto viewer’s retinas. These after images slowly diminish and dissolve into the dark, until the next eruption of light. EKO starts with ~15minutes of complete blackout, with an abstract surround sound-scape, something like a slowly gyrating patterned mass. Once first light disrupts the dark, the work’s sound-scape attunes to and accentuates the fragile nature of the afterimages. Sound is present always, with high dynamic range.EKO runs for about 40 minutes.Due to the phenomenological nature of the work, video documentation is not available. Photos depict 1⁄3 sec moments of light, before retinal after images, which can’t be documented. Seemingly trapped and surveyed by a virtual camera, in the weightless choreography of STROM, these virtual protagonists resemble anonymous particles: a pulsing, amorphous mass, a cloud of blurry matter composed of body parts and light. The work fluctuates between realism and abstraction. Its kinetic gestalt evokes the motion patterns of animals trapped in their cages, looping back and forth, in endless circles, limited by their confines. In STROM, personal agency is replaced by invisible outside powers: Like tidal forces, impossible to escape. Sonically, the work draws both from repetitive algorithmic patterns, as well as from organically sounding forms. Most of thound is generated by the virtual bodies, the swarm’s motions and interactions. Each character acts as one voice in an abstract choir, all together rendering a pulsing drone soundscape. The work premiered at the Zeiss Planetarium in Bochum, Germany in 2021.STROM is part of Kurt Hentschläger's body of generative 3D animation and sound work, beginning with KARMA in 2004-2008, and continuing with CLUSTER, HIVE and CORE in 2009-2012. A kind of flooded, haunted sculpture garden, at architectural scale, with visitors free to explore at will. Users can pass through objects, discovering hidden interior spaces. Moving though the environment, sound is dynamically changing - rythmical patterns, strange noises and sonic fields appear and disappear and remix according to visitors positions. No Exit Oasis is partially a reflection on the period of personal confinement during the 2020/21 pandemic. As such, the work acted as both a space for escape as well as mirroring a shrunken world, in which most movement and tangible human exchange turned virtual.
